Google Currents

Google is well known for deprecating consumer services. The core workspace services are less part of wacky  as the Google Workspace contract includes a reasonable term for decommissioning services.

A good indication about the future of the Google Workspace service is the adoption across users and the number of updates. Based on both metrics, you can assume that a new user experience investment in rolling out Google Currents for your organisation would be a mistake.

- there are have been no recent Google updates. On the Google Workspace blog, the latest update is of June 2020. Which is ironically the announcement of Currents.

The push of Google is on a similar service, called Google Chat Spaces. Spaces are the rename of Google Chat rooms. (note to myself, write another blog about name changes in Google).

Google help provides insight in when you should a Space and when you would use a Google Group. Ehuh? so no intended use of Google Currents?

Spaces: A central place where people can share files, assign tasks, and stay connected.

The Google Current product page tells:

Currents: all employees can engage in rich discussions at every level of their organization

Currents looks for me death.

Dear Google,

Please be clear. Why are there no updates on Google Currents? Will it be replaced by Google Chat? Is so, please announce that it is death, then we can move on. Lets make space great in Google Chat and let Currents move to the Google graveyard.

Thank you!
